Case Study No.1 - Yacht Rebuild
Type of Yacht: 1965 built, 60m, MCA LY2 Coded, Classic Motor Yacht

Nature of Works:

Naval Architecture, Engineering and Consultancy

Scope of Works:

MICS Ltd was approached by the Managers and Malta Superyachts Ltd, to provide technical and consultancy services during the extensive rebuild to the yacht. Scope of works successfully entrusted to MICS Ltd included:

  1. Feasibility study for installation of hydraulic passarelle. Based on designs presented, it was identified that installation of this equipment was not feasible;
  2. Issuance of Tender specification, and supplier selection for engineroom fixed fire-fighting system. ABS Class and MCA approved system was successfully installed and commissioned;
  3. Design of hull reinforcement for installation of Quantum 21800 stabilisers. Naval Architectural works were approved by ABS;
  4. Structural Design for installation of tender handling crane. Naval Architectural works and Crane Testing approved and Witnessed by ABS Class.
  5. Technical Consultancy: General consultancy assisting Owner’s Site Manager in coordinating Class and MCA.

Case Study No.2 – Conversion/Rebuild – Coding/Certification/Supervision
Type of Yacht: Benetti SpA - 1967 build, 33m, Classic Commercial Motor Yacht

Nature of Works:

Yacht Coding and Supervision – Major Rebuild

Scope of Works:

MICS Ltd was approached by the Managers of the classic motor yacht Gardenia ta Super-yachts Ltd, to provide Technical and Coding Surveys during the extensive rebuild to the yacht. Scope of works successfully entrusted to MICS Ltd included:

  1. Supervision during construction for compliance with the Transport Malta Commercial Yacht Code. We periodically visited Yacht Yard to monitor works to approved drawings and yacht building standards. This including major hull, mechanical and electrical works, to equivalence to class requirements.
  2. Drawing Approval In Accordance with the Transport Malta Commercial Yacht Code. This included full compliance evaluation related to hull structure, stability , freeboard, life-saving appliance arrangement, fire safety arrangements, pollution prevention,  machinery and electrical arrangements,
  3. Witnessing of commissioning, basin trials and sea trials.
  4. Issuing of Statutory Certification on behalf of Transport Malta.

Case Study No.3  –  Engine Damage Survey
Type of Yacht: 2007 build, GRP, Pleasure Motor Yacht

Insurance Survey and Consultancy

Scope of Works:

MICS Ltd was approached by the Owners of the yacht to investigate cause and nature of failure to one of the Diesel Engines arranged on the motor yacht, which at time of failure had 260 running hours. At time of our appointment the Engine Makers were refusing to accept any liabilities, claiming that the damages occurred outside warranty period, and the Underwriters rejected the claim, stating that the cause of damages were attributable to wear and tear.

Following our surveys and report, the Owners received, free of charge, a complete replacement engine by Engine Makers and Underwriters covered labour costs related installation, commissioning and testing of the new engine.
